Offerings New Positive changes in permitting - changes to hand-carrying rules - read the release (PDF). New SPDN ‘Homoptera’ 2004 Proceedings Available Online The proceedings for the SPDN 2004 ‘Homoptera’ workshop are now published and available in the December issue of the Florida Entomologist, pages 458-534 http://www.fcla.edu/FlaEnt/fe884.htm . Taxonomic keys developed by Drs.Chris Dietrich, Greg Evans, Greg Hodges, Doug Miller, and Steve Wilson are included in this publication. For those interested in vector and pathogen relationships, Dr. Wilson also presents some useful vector-specific information relating to planthoppers. New Florida Chilli Thrips Training Results Available Approximately 45 participants at 15 locations attended the Chilli thrips, Scirtothrips dorsalis training session on December 13, 2006. Results and responses from the training were extremely positive. Two out-of-state locations, Texas and Louisiana, were accommodated. Attendees consisted of 13 county extension agents, 1 Master Gardener, 6 industry personnel, 4 FDACS-DPI employees, 2 USDA-APHIS-PPQ employees, two out-of-state extension specialists, and 17 general UF/IFAS faculty or staff employees. Industry groups represented included A&L Labs, Six L’s, Syngenta, and Yoder Brothers. Drs. Joe Funderburk, Dak Seal, and Lance Osborne of the University of Florida led the training. Mr. Richard Clark of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Plant Industry, provided a regulatory update. Florida counties should receive a CD of the videotaped training within the next month. The videotaped training session will also be posted on the SPDN chilli thrips page as soon as it is available.
New UF/IFAS Entomology Educational Resources Available Submitted by Tom Fasulo, UF Drs. John Capinera and Susan Webb of the University of Florida released three photo gallery CD-ROMS of vegetable pests last year. Individuals working with vegetable pests might find these resources useful for field diagnostics. More information (species lists, usage requirements, costs, etc.) are available at http://pests.ifas.ufl.edu/software/det_veggies.htm. Links to other educational and for-sale resources in the Entomology Department can be found at: http://pests.ifas.ufl.edu/software/index.htm . A Cockroach CD-ROM is also available, and a Stored Products Pests CD-COM is scheduled to be released soon. New January Soybean Rust Finds across the Southeast Sporulating pustules, with viable spores, have been noted in 9 counties in FL this month. Training Opportunities New Citrus Greening Training by Polycom Find all the presentations, plus the Q&A session at the SPDN HLB page. New The SPDN is officially announcing a Coleoptera Workshop training that will be held in Blacksburg, VA from May 22-25, 2006 http://conference.ifas.ufl.edu/coleoptera/. Workshop topics to be covered include Cerambycidae, Scolytinae, and Chrysomelidae beetles. Eight national taxonomic specialists from Brigham Young University, Cornell University, Oregon State Department of Agriculture, Texas A & M University, University of Florida, University of Maryland, and the USDA-ARS-SEL will lead the the training. Enrollment space will initially be limited to two participants per SPDN state. For more details on approval to register for the training, contact Amanda Hodges achodges@ifas.ufl.edu. New There will be a high risk pest training and workshop at the University of Florida, Entomology and Nematology Department, UF Campus, Gainesville. March 14, 2006, 1:00 PM to March 16, 2006 at noon. Diagnosis, identification and management topics will be presented on these pests or plant pathogens: Citrus Greening and Canker, Begomoviruses, Tospoviruses, Ralstonia solanacearum, Sudden Oak Death, Soybean Rust, scales, mealybugs, Q-Biotype whitefly, Chili thrips, aphids, leafhoppers and true bugs. New The Western Plant Diagnostic Network is announcing an intensive, taxonomic training session on 'Homoptera' that will be held March 21-24, 2006 in Davis, CA. Priority registration will be provided to insect identifiers and appropriate extension specialists in the western region, but others will be permitted to register on a first come, first serve basis. As you can see from the agenda available on the WPDN website https://www.wpdn.org/ , we have a high-quality list of experts involved in leading this training. Up to 60 participants may be accommodated. Registration details are provided on the WPDN website link. The cost of registration is only $400, but we are also requesting that you purchase (or bring your own copies) of a few additional required resources. The registration deadline is February 15, 2006. Second International Workshop for the Morphological and Molecular Identification of the Straminipiles: Phytophthora and Pythium May 21-26, 2006 in Raleigh NC. Please find more information here.
Virus Inclusion Workshop, Gainesville, Florida 5/8/06 - 5/10/06 A 3-day introductory course for scientists, diagnosticians, and/or technicians who have no previous experience or limited experience with virus inclusion identification. "Hands-on" lab work will include virus inclusion identification of potyviruses, tobamoviruses, potexviruses, cucumoviruses, comoviruses, tomato spotted wilt virus, and geminiviruses. Other groups will be demonstrated through the use of prepared slides and PowerPoint presentations. Both the letter and brochure have more information.
